Leadership Training Cost Per Employee UK

published on 16 October 2026

UK leadership training costs range from about £65 + VAT per employee for short self-study courses to several thousand pounds for longer senior programmes. We compare options for HR teams, L&D managers and employers budgeting for individual places or private team training.

For a live online day, allow roughly £250–£469 + VAT per person. In-house fees can start at £1,150–£1,400 per group day, so attendance affects the cost per employee. We recommend comparing the total payable, including travel, assessments and any VAT you cannot reclaim - not just the advertised fee.

We explain how delivery format, course length, seniority and cohort size affect your budget. Use our leadership training listings, in-house training category and cost and pricing pages to compare like-for-like quotes and build your shortlist.

1. Online Open Courses

Pricing and inclusions

Budget around £250–£469 + VAT per delegate for a live, one-day online course. Premium practitioner-led programmes start at about £650 per delegate. Scheduled sessions typically include trainer interaction, discussion and digital materials. Check whether assessments, coaching, recordings or post-course access cost extra.

Self-directed access is the cheapest online option, but it does not include live tuition. Compare these as different products, rather than equivalent formats.

M Training’s live Zoom course runs from 09:30–16:00/16:30, with materials supplied beforehand.

Programme length and management level

Compare trainer-led hours and management level, rather than course titles. Front-line management courses usually cover delegation, communication and conflict resolution; senior programmes may add strategy or coaching. Longer programmes can combine live sessions with independent study, so check how much of the advertised learning time involves a trainer.

Per-employee cost for small cohorts

Revolution Learning lists its live online Leadership and People Management course at £469 + VAT for one delegate, £445.55 each for two, and £398.65 each for three or more. Three places therefore total £1,195.95 excluding VAT, or £1,435.14 including 20% VAT - £478.38 per employee.

This discount applies to multiple individual places, not a private group booking. The lower per-employee price comes from booking three seats together. Check whether everyone must attend on the same date when comparing small-team bookings with larger cohorts.

Open courses suit one to three managers. When comparing providers in the leadership training directory, check maximum class size, cancellation terms and whether the fee includes live delivery. For more control over content or scheduling, the next sections compare in-person, hybrid and in-house costs.

2. In-Person Open Courses

Pricing and inclusions

Classroom courses add venue and travel costs but offer more face-to-face teaching time, making them one of several leadership training formats with distinct pricing structures.

Budget £495–£695 + VAT per employee for a standard one- to two-day classroom course, based on MTD’s indicative range. This includes materials, lunch and post-course support. Confirm refreshments, assessments, certificates and venue hire in writing. Allow separately for travel, parking and any overnight stay.

Programme length and seniority

These examples show how course length and management level affect fees per employee:

Asset Training Academy lists one-day classroom courses at £325–£375 + VAT, including materials, lunch, refreshments and CPD accreditation; prices vary by venue and date. For experienced managers, Dale Carnegie lists a three-day programme at £2,200–£2,350 + VAT. Cranfield’s three-day residential programme is £4,450 + VAT.

Check which accommodation and meals the residential fee covers. Match the course level to your employees before comparing the total fee and cost per teaching day. Check whether teaching days run consecutively or in separate modules, as repeat visits can add travel costs.

Cohort-adjusted employee costs

Revolution Learning’s two-day classroom course costs £569 + VAT for one delegate, falling to £483.65 each for three or more, with lunch, refreshments, materials and a certificate included. Three places total £1,450.95 excluding VAT. At 20% VAT, the invoice is £1,741.14, or £580.38 per employee before travel.

For several employees, compare an in-house quote with the discounted open-course total. Check minimum booking charges and cancellation terms. Use the leadership training directory to shortlist classroom options by location, duration and management level.

If you want a mix of classroom and online delivery, compare hybrid open programmes next.

3. Hybrid Open Programmes

Pricing and inclusions

Hybrid programmes combine scheduled online learning with face-to-face teaching, residential sessions or an in-person workshop. Indicative fees range from £1,500–£3,500 plus VAT per employee for shorter blended programmes to £10,000–£12,000 plus VAT for premium senior options. Check the live teaching hours and whether fees cover coaching, assessments, materials, accommodation and travel.

A six-week University of Hull programme, taught face-to-face and online, is listed at £1,500 plus VAT. Manchester’s core blended package includes tuition, materials, three Hogan psychometric reports and six months of e-learning access. Coaching and the CMI Award cost extra. Roffey Park’s three-month programme costs £3,500 excluding VAT, including two residential modules, accommodation, meals, materials, virtual peer consulting and platform access.

Programme length and seniority

Compare live contact hours, not just calendar length, and check the level of seniority each programme serves.

The King’s Fund lists £11,600 plus VAT per employee for five weeks of learning across six months. Check the live teaching hours to compare the cost per hour.

Longer programmes do not always cost more per teaching hour. They may also include more workplace application, peer sessions and coaching. Senior-level fees often increase when programmes include diagnostics, strategy projects, coaching or accreditation.

Manchester’s blended programme ranges from £3,990 for the core option to £4,740 with coaching and £4,990 with coaching plus the CMI Award.

Happy’s Brave Leadership programme costs £4,860 plus VAT per person for groups of up to 12. It includes two in-person days, 25 live online hours and online resources across 12 months.

For team bookings, compare the total after discounts rather than the list price per delegate.

Cohort-adjusted employee costs

Open programmes charge per delegate, so booking more places does not automatically reduce the cost per employee.

At Hull, a 20% group discount reduces the fee to £1,200 per employee before VAT. Three places at £1,500 would cost £4,500 before VAT; the discounted total is £3,600 before VAT.

Confirm whether discounts apply per cohort or per organisation, and whether a minimum booking is required.

Happy also publishes rates per person by organisation type: £4,080 for SMEs, £3,600 for public-sector organisations and £3,200 for charities, all plus VAT.

For private team delivery, compare these fees with in-house rates using the directory’s leadership training listings, in-house training category and cost and pricing pages.

4. Online In-House Programmes

Pricing and inclusions

Live online in-house training is usually priced per group, not per delegate.

Mark Baglow starts at £1,150 a day for tailored leadership and management training via Microsoft Teams, with up to 10 participants. The listing states no VAT is charged; confirm this at quote stage.

Ask whether the fee changes for groups of fewer than 10. Check whether it covers tailoring, digital materials, assessments, follow-up and the Teams or Zoom licence.

Programme length and seniority

Mark Baglow’s two-day online programme starts at £2,300 per group: for 10 employees, that works out at £230 per employee for the full programme, or £115 per employee per day.

Confirm the live training hours and request separate prices for two-hour, half-day, full-day and multi-session formats. Facilitator day rates of £1,500–£3,000 increase with seniority and delivery complexity. Budget more for executive delivery than for a basic workshop.

Cohort-adjusted employee costs

At £1,150 a day, the cost is £115 each for 10 employees, £143.75 for eight and £230 for five, before extras.

Stay within the recommended participant limit rather than adding people to reduce the cost per employee. Ask whether extra learners require another facilitator or a separate session.

If 20% VAT applies, £1,150 becomes £1,380, or £138 per employee for 10 people.

Compare group fees, participant limits and inclusions in the in-house training listings. Hybrid in-house programmes combine online and face-to-face delivery; compare their blended pricing next.

5. In-Person In-House Programmes

Pricing and inclusions

In-person in-house training is usually priced per group. The trainer fee is only part of the cost per employee.

One published rate starts at £1,400 for one day or £2,800 for two. Location, group size and tailoring affect the quote. Other published classroom rates reach £3,000–£4,000 plus VAT per day.

Using your own meeting room avoids room hire. Otherwise, indicative room-only budgets are £300–£700 per day outside London and £450–£1,000 in London. These rates exclude catering, AV, trainer travel and accommodation, so check each separately. You can also use a leadership training cost estimator to generate quick projections.

Programme length and seniority

A half-day does not necessarily cost half the full-day rate.

One published rate starts at £3,000 plus VAT for a half-day, compared with £3,995 plus VAT for a full day. Senior-leadership classroom rates start at £4,395 plus VAT a day.

Check whether the higher senior-level fee includes diagnostics, preparation and follow-up coaching as part of your cost-benefit analysis for leadership training.

Cohort-adjusted employee costs

At the published £1,400 one-day group rate, the trainer fee is £175 each for eight attendees, £140 for 10 or about £93 for 15, before VAT and extras. These figures assume the group stays within the provider’s limit.

Venue, travel and other charges are additional.

For a 12-person budget scenario, a £3,995 classroom day, an illustrative £500 venue-and-catering allowance and £300 for trainer travel total £4,795, or £399.58 per employee before any applicable VAT.

Check VAT on each cost line and whether the fixed fee changes if attendance falls. When shortlisting providers in the directory, compare their in-person and blended in-house options alongside the relevant category and pricing pages. Blended delivery can reduce venue time.

6. Hybrid In-House Programmes

Pricing and inclusions

Hybrid in-house programmes usually cost more than online-only delivery but less than fully classroom-led programmes. Fees cover both formats and design time. Budget £4,000–£12,000 plus VAT per cohort for a short to medium programme for 10–20 employees. This is a planning range, not a published tariff.

Providers quote for a mix of virtual sessions and classroom workshops, with optional digital modules, projects, coaching and follow-up. Bespoke design, senior facilitators, one-to-one coaching costs and psychometrics increase costs.

Ask for separate prices for design, delivery, platform access, assessments and follow-up. Diagnostics can account for much of the budget.

Growth Performance lists 360-degree feedback at £750 per profile, including a 60–90-minute debrief, adding £11,250 before VAT across 15 participants.

Programme length and seniority

Compare live learning hours and support, not calendar length alone. Gaps between workshops usually allow time for workplace assignments rather than extra facilitator time. Senior-level programmes often need more tailoring and individual coaching.

Growth Performance quotes £1,500–£3,000 a day for senior facilitators or coaches, depending on complexity.

Cohort-adjusted employee costs

A £6,000 plus VAT package for 15 new managers, covering two virtual workshops, one classroom day, digital resources and one follow-up session, costs £400 each before VAT or £480 including 20% VAT. A £12,000 plus VAT package for 12 senior leaders, with bespoke design, two classroom days, virtual action-learning sessions and one coaching session per person, costs £1,000 each before VAT or £1,200 including VAT.

Confirm the cohort cap before adding participants. Coaching and assessment fees may apply per person even if workshop fees stay fixed. When shortlisting providers through the directory, ask whether they can run parallel groups without charging twice for design. Compare their quotes against the relevant programme category and cost pages.

How Programme Length and Seniority Affect Cost

Separate live teaching hours from self-study and assignments. Audience seniority helps explain price differences, but specialist content and one-to-one support usually drive higher fees.

Programmes of the same length can have very different prices depending on who they serve and what they include.

Audience and duration Published example and delivery model Live hours Published fee and VAT Inclusions and cost checks
First-line managers: half-day LIA leadership module 3.5 hours From £2,400 per cohort of up to 20; VAT treatment not stated May include facilitation, materials, CPD certification and a pre-session briefing.

Senior leaders and directors: modular Cranfield, High Performance Leadership; three days, three days and one further day Seven stated days; hours not stated £11,750 + VAT; £14,100 including 20% VAT. Accommodation charges may affect the total.
Year-long bespoke programme Bespoke multi-session programme Quote required Quote required Itemise workshops, coaching, projects and tailoring.

When comparing providers in the directory, check delivery format, inclusions, VAT, accommodation charges and cohort limits. Use stated live hours only; do not calculate hourly rates from day counts.

Accreditation can increase the fee without adding teaching hours.

MTD lists its high-impact leadership course at £595 + VAT with CPD certification, or £695 + VAT with ILM and CPD certificates: a £100 ex-VAT difference.

Ask providers to price accreditation, coaching, assessments, 360-degree feedback and tailoring separately from core delivery.

Compare open-course and in-house quotes using the same per-employee calculation:

Cost per employee = (quoted fee + extras + applicable VAT) ÷ attendees.

Delivery Days Net total Cohort Net cost per employee Gross total (20% VAT; no extras) Gross cost per employee
Online 1 £1,150 5 £230 £1,380 £276
Online 1 £1,150 10 £115 £1,380 £138
Online 1 £1,150 12 £95.83 £1,380 £115

In-person 1 £1,400 5 £280 £1,680 £336
In-person 1 £1,400 10 £140 £1,680 £168
In-person 1 £1,400 12 £116.67 £1,680 £140

In-person 2 £2,800 10 £280 £3,360 £336
In-person 2 £2,800 12 £233.33 £3,360 £280

Extras and VAT usually determine the final per-person cost once the base fee is agreed.

An estimated ten-person in-person booking of £1,400 training + £300 venue + £200 assessments totals £1,900 net. Assuming 20% VAT on each component adds £380, giving £2,280 gross: £190 net or £228 gross per employee.

Show both net and gross figures, and check VAT treatment and recovery with your finance team.

Divide by actual attendees, not booked places. Confirm minimum charges, minimum billable numbers and cohort caps.

Quotation checklist: mark materials, platform, refreshments, venue, assessments, certificates, tailoring, coaching costs and travel as included, extra charge or estimate. Check cancellation terms too. Request the supplier’s written inclusions schedule before comparing quotes.

Use these checks when shortlisting leadership training providers from the directory and comparing their quotes against cost and pricing information.

Which Training Option Best Fits Your Team?

Open courses usually suit one to three employees. In-house training can make better use of the budget when enough people share similar needs. Hybrid programmes suit teams that need workplace practice and follow-up over several weeks or months.

Pros and Cons

Option Advantages Disadvantages Best-fit situation
Online open No travel; individual places available Limited tailoring; workplace distractions Aspiring or new managers addressing a specific skills gap
In-person open Role-play, trainer feedback and perspectives from other organisations Travel costs; fixed dates Individuals or small teams needing intensive practice
Hybrid open Live sessions with time for reflection and application Requires commitment over time; live teaching hours may be unclear Individuals needing a longer development programme
Online in-house Shared objectives; suitable for teams across locations Screen fatigue; enough attendees needed to justify the fixed fee Dispersed first-line or middle managers
In-person in-house Confidential discussion; practice based on the organisation’s needs Venue and travel costs; poor value for small cohorts Teams needing consistent behaviours, including senior groups
Hybrid in-house Follow-up and workplace application over time More coordination and manager support needed Leadership pipelines or longer-term senior leadership development and executive coaching

Compare fees, cost per live teaching hour, total cost and suitability for the leadership level. To calculate the live-hour cost per employee, divide their allocated cost, excluding recoverable VAT and optional extras, by the scheduled live teaching hours. Record self-directed hours separately.

The total cost per employee should include travel, accommodation, venue charges, materials, assessments, irrecoverable VAT, paid learning time and replacement cover.

Request quotes that state participant numbers, seniority, live and self-directed hours, location, dates, VAT, minimum fees, cancellation terms and payment schedule. Ask providers to separate mandatory charges from optional extras and confirm whether fees apply per delegate, day, cohort or licence.

Use the Leadership Training Hub directory to filter by delivery format, audience, specialism and indicative cost. Browse the relevant training categories, then check provider listings for pricing and inclusions before shortlisting or booking.

FAQs

When does in-house training become cheaper than open courses?

In-house training is typically more cost-effective for groups of five or more, with greater savings for teams of 10 or more. Open courses are usually the cheapest option for one or two people. In-house sessions charge a flat fee, so the cost per person falls as the group grows.

For groups of 10 or more, bespoke corporate programmes can cost 40% to 66% less per person than individual open-course enrolments.

Can I get funding for leadership training in the UK?

Yes. Government-backed apprenticeships, such as the Level 7 Senior Leader Apprenticeship, can cover 95% to 100% of training costs for eligible employers. Grant-supported courses may also offer reduced rates on certain modules for organisations with tighter budgets.

VAT-registered organisations may reclaim VAT on training fees through their standard VAT returns, provided the training is for business purposes.

How can I measure the return on leadership training?

Before training starts, use 360-degree feedback or a skills gap analysis to establish a baseline and set measurable goals. Track changes in productivity, profit margins and employee engagement, as well as reductions in staff turnover. Record qualitative outcomes alongside these measures.

Research suggests returns of £2.86 to £7 for every £1 spent on development. When comparing leadership training providers, look for programmes with regular progress reviews, coaching or action learning to help results last. Use the cost and pricing guide to compare fees alongside the support included.
